Jamaican basketballers Samardo Samuels, Jerome Jordon, Daniel Rose and Karim McFarlane all had major impacts for their teams in US Collegiate basketball competition at the weekend.
University of Tulsa's Jordon and Notre Dame's McFarlane, both junior centres, were the most impressive performers, scoring career-highs 25 and 26 points, respectively, in their team's victories. The 7'0" former Jamaica College player, Jordon who also posted 10 rebounds in his team's 69-50 win over Marshall University, reached double figures in the first eight minutes and had 16 points by half-time.
He had seven-of-12 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, McFarlane helped Notre Dame maintain their unbeaten start from four games with his impressive total against the Ohio Dominicans in their 79-67 home win in the American Mideast Conference (AMC) on Saturday.
The former St George's College and Urban Knights players has now scored 20 points or more in eight games, with his previous high being 25 points, though he holds two 24-points performance as well. Meanwhile, another Jamaican, Daniel Rose, also impressed as Cedarville University maintain their 20-match unbeaten record in the NAIA Division Two on Sunday.
Rose came off the bench and scored 18 points with a game-high nine rebounds to lead Cedarville to a 79-67 win over Malone. The former Buckfield United star also scored the tying basket for Cedarville, bagging eight of their final 14 points. In a Big East clash between rivals Louisville and Pittsburg University on Saturday, freshman centre Samuels gave an electrifying second-half performance for Louisville, who ended No 1 team, Pittsburg's perfect start to the season with a 69-63 victory.
Samuels posted 10 points and seven rebounds as the Cardinals registered thier first win over a No 1 side since 2003.
