Lysson's Special Education School is a school for children with learning disabilities on the campus of Lysson's Elementary School. Miss Pauline Nunes is the director. She has approximately 60 children enrolled. Besides being the head teacher at this school, Miss Nunes also serves as the pastor for two Pentecostal churches in the area. She has a great heart for these children, but needs much help. Many of the children come to school hungry and then have no lunch. They must choose between paying bus fare and eating. Miss Nunes, primarily at her own cost, feeds breakfast to these children two days per week. The schools have little equipment for learning. There is no television, VCR, or DVD player. Only one portable cassette/CD player is available for the four classes. When we asked Miss Nunes about a computer, she told us she only had one and needed more.
Miss Nunes says graduation day is the saddest day of the year, because every year, there are approximately 12-15 children approximately age 14 who graduate and are not able to enter another school. They must return home with no further education, no job training, and no future. She says many become the subject of abuse of various kinds. Miss Nunes dreams of a vocational training center to help her children. We pray that with God's help, support from others, and God's guidance, that we will be able to help develop a skill's training center for these children. We believe these are some of God's forgotten children.
The roof and ceiling are badly damaged allowing rain to pour in. Much of the ceiling and supporting timbers are rotten and/or have severe termite damage. In areas the roof is about to cave in. We will research this and pray about undertaking a repair.
