| | CABHN Meeting FRIDAY! Cash Assistance for Low or No Income People Learn what cash assistance programs are available in CT. We'll talk about the different programs, the requirements for each, how to apply, and options if you're not approved. When: March 4th, 9:30 a.m. |
Support HB 5439 which Eliminates Outdated and Expensive Asset Limits from CT's Cash Programs! Asset limits cost money- It takes a lot of time for DSS workers to verify assets. This costs money and wastes time that DSS workers could be using to process applications. Very few people have assets over the limit-Denials for being over assets account for significantly less than one percent of total denials. Most people who apply for cash assistance have very little of value. In fact, the average resources of a family that gets cash assistance is only $315. Asset limits keep people from being self-sufficient-They force low-income families to "spend down" personal reserves that can keep families from falling deeper into poverty and help them move to financial security and opportunity. | This week at the Legislature It's a very busy week and session is in full swing! CABHN SUPPORTS: HB 5397 which shortens the time period landlords have to respond to tenants who are without essential services like water and electricity. Public hearing is March 1st. HB 5439 which eliminates asset limits in CT's cash assistance programs. Public hearing is March 3rd. SB 112 which provides child care to TFA recipients while they attend school. Public hearing is March 2nd. HB 5437 Have you experienced problems with Logisticare? This is your chance to share your story! This bill, as written, does not go far enough to address the problems so we need people who will speak about their RECENT issues with Logisticare and why this bill doesn't address the immediate need for change. Public hearing is March 3rd. CABHN OPPOSES these bills: SB 105 which further limits the amount the State will contribute to burial expenses for very low or no income people. SB 277 which removes the State's waivers that allow disabled people, and people in high unemployment towns to continue getting SNAP. Public hearing is March 3rd. Call your legislator and tell them what YOU support and oppose! Call CABHN to find out how to get involved in legislative advocacy, 860-904-5534. |
